Let’s not sugarcoat this: watching your parents age can feel like a slow heartbreak.
One moment they're invincible, racing you to the car or stirring the gravy with that same confidence they stirred through life—and the next, you're seeing hesitation in their steps, hearing confusion in their voice, or wondering quietly if they’re forgetting more than usual.
It’s unsettling. It’s emotional. It can leave you feeling helpless.
You are not helpless. In fact, you’re powerful in the most important way.
You can show up. Consistently. Compassionately. Curiously. You can become the bridge between their strength and their future independence.
And trust me on this—they don’t want to feel like a burden.
So your role isn’t to hover or fix—it’s to support without stealing their dignity. It’s to love with your ears, your actions, your presence.
💛 10 Ways to Support Aging Parents (Without Making Them Feel Like They're Losing Control):
Make connection consistent. A weekly call, coffee date, or text thread creates rhythm—and they’ll come to rely on it more than you know.
Ask them what they need. Not what you think they need.
Be curious, not controlling. “How’s driving been lately?” lands better than “You’re not driving at night anymore, right?”
Encourage small movements. Suggest a “floor to stand” challenge once a day. It’s a literal predictor of longevity and fall risk.
Join them at appointments. Either go with them or help prepare questions in advance. Be their second set of ears.
Normalize topics that feel taboo. Bladder issues, medication confusion, social isolation—all of it is real. Talk about it without embarrassment.
Ask about their friendships. Social connection is as protective as exercise.
Share your wins and your mistakes. Let them know they’re still part of your life, not just a project.
Help them with tech—but teach, don’t take over. It preserves independence.
Celebrate them—now. Ask for the stories, the traditions, the recipes, the videos and voices, the memories. Don’t wait.
🧠 Fyonna’s 10-Point Reality Check: ( and most of these could apply to YOU as well)
Can they open their medication bottles safely and correctly? Food containers- have you tried opening pickles lately? And batteries?? Sheesh!
Do they know where the nearest activity locations, community spaces or rec program is?
Are they practicing getting down and back up from the floor once daily? (This skill correlates directly with morbidity and mobility.)
Are they comfortable going out alone? Do they feel safe? How's the movement up and down stairs? Sideways? Bending and reaching? Twisting?
Have they had a fall—or almost had one—and brushed it off? The downplaying here is huge- and fall support training is one of my specialities!
Are they downplaying health appointments, or are they as confusing to them as they are to us sometimes? Cholesterol analysis anyone???
Are they engaging socially (groups, events, coffee dates)? Watch- The Blue Zone- community connection is everything!
How’s their driving? (Ask gently.) Have fun with this one. Support exercises to improve reaction and agility timing.
How’s their grip strength? It’s a powerful indicator of cardiovascular health. HUGE!!!!
Any signs of incontinence or recurring UTIs? These can deeply impact cognition and confidence.
💡 Bonus: Install a bidet. It’s not just for “old age.” It’s for dignity, health, and ease. For everyone.
🚩 2 Warning Signs That Deserve Immediate Attention:
Sudden confusion, memory loss, or disorientation (especially in the evening).
A noticeable decline in mobility, balance, or ability to complete basic tasks (especially hygiene or cooking).
These aren’t overreactions—they’re signals. Respond with love, not fear.
💬 From My Heart to Yours
I’ve screwed up too. I’ve waited too long to ask my mom the questions I should have. I’ve watched her fade and felt the guilt of missed moments. This isn’t about shame—it’s about action.
Your parents may not live to 90 or 100. So today is the day to ask, to support, to laugh, to sit beside them without needing anything fixed.
This is not a season of losing them. It’s a season of re-learning them.
They are not helpless. They are still vibrant, curious, and layered with history. Don’t rob them of their independence. Instead, walk with them, not ahead of them.
