Understanding Trauma: What It Is, How It Shows Up, and How We Can Heal Together

Trauma is not just an event. It’s what happens inside us as a result of overwhelming experiences that we didn’t have the tools, support, or safety to process. It can come from a single event, a lifetime of stress, or the unseen emotional weight of living in a world that doesn’t always feel safe.
Trauma doesn’t have to be “big” to be real.
Whether it stems from injury, illness, grief, childhood experiences, relationships, discrimination, or burnout, trauma shapes how we breathe, how we move, how we trust, and how we show up in our own lives.
I've been there-too. One scenario I'll share had me in therapy . I felt such shame, grief, anger, fear and that overwhelming thought that I would not be able to move past it to the other side. But I'll tell you, the universe kept putting this awful and angry person back in my life over and over until I understood their actions were based in their own trauma. It does not excuse the terrible things they chose to do- however, it helped me see them in a more empathetic light. And that was the heal.

Our bodies keep the score — long after the traumatic moment has passed. Some common physical signs of unresolved trauma include:
Trauma often lives in the nervous system, not just the mind. That’s why trauma-informed movement and coaching are so vital — they help us reconnect, restore, and reclaim our relationship with our bodies on our terms.
Does this list resonate with you? I related to all of this, along with a case of effluvium (my hair fell out). It also impacted me as a strong value held is Justice. Kindness. Empathy.

You don’t need fancy tools. Just a quiet space, a kind approach, and the willingness to feel.
At Bees Knees, I believe in whole-person wellness.
That means not just pushing you harder, but walking/wheeling beside you — especially when the road includes trauma, chronic pain, injury, or grief.
My trauma-informed practice is grounded in empathy, body awareness, and individualized care. Whether you're rebuilding strength, confidence, or trust in your body — I am here, holding space.
You're invited to a free sit-and-chat — no pressure, no expectations — just a warm cup of tea and a conversation about where you’re at, and what I can do with you and for you.
I also partner with Muskoka Victim Services as a Crisis Responder as well as local mental health professionals, somatic therapists, and trauma-informed care networks so you’re never walking alone.
