Movement as Medicine: Why Adaptive Fitness Matters More Than Ever

fyonna vanderwerf | AUG 18, 2025

We’ve all heard the phrase “exercise is medicine.” But here in Canada, where over 44% of adults live with at least one chronic health condition (Statistics Canada, 2023), movement isn’t just medicine—it’s survival, empowerment, and a way to reclaim life when the body feels like it’s working against you.

Yet the fitness industry hasn’t kept up. Traditional gyms still cater to the already-fit, overlooking the millions of Canadians living with arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, chronic pain, or mobility challenges.

10 Ways the Fitness Industry Falls Short on Adaptive Fitness

  1. One-size-fits-all programming – cookie-cutter workouts ignore individual medical needs.

  2. Inaccessible spaces – gyms without elevators, ramps, or proper equipment.

  3. No chronic pain education – trainers often lack the knowledge to adapt for flare-ups or fatigue.

  4. Aesthetic obsession – focus on “weight loss” or “six packs” over health, strength, and function.

  5. Age bias – assuming people over 50 can’t or shouldn’t train hard.

  6. Lack of representation – few images of real bodies, disabilities, or diverse ages in marketing.

  7. Program gaps – little integration with healthcare providers or rehab professionals.

  8. Mental health disconnect – ignoring the mind-body link in chronic illness and pain.

  9. No caregiver consideration – failing to support those who are balancing care for others.

  10. Exclusivity culture – fitness as a luxury, rather than an accessible, life-saving tool.

The Canadian Reality

  • 44% of Canadian adults live with at least one chronic condition.

  • 6 million Canadians experience chronic pain (Canadian Pain Task Force, 2022).

  • 1 in 5 adults lives with some form of disability (Statistics Canada, 2022).

These aren’t small numbers. They represent our families, our friends, our communities—and maybe ourselves.

Movement as Medicine for Chronic Pain
Exercise isn’t about punishing your body—it’s about healing it. Research shows movement can:

  • Reduce inflammation and stiffness.

  • Improve sleep quality and energy levels.

  • Boost mood, decrease anxiety, and reduce brain fog.

  • Build strength to ease daily tasks and prevent injuries.

The key is adaptation: meeting people where they are with programs that flex around pain levels, mobility, and real life.
