Are You Busy or Just Spinning Those Wheels?

Fyonna Vanderwerf | JAN 13, 2025

You know that feeling when you’re juggling a million things at once, and someone asks, “How are you?” and all you can manage is, “Busy!”? Yeah, we’ve all been there. But here’s the real question: Are you busy—or are you actually productive? Because let me tell you, being busy without purpose is like running on a hamster wheel. You’re moving, but you’re not really getting anywhere.

I ran a gym for 5 years at that pace- always with a list, a chart of tasks, from 5:00 am- 8:30 pm at night 5-7 days a week, I managed to keep that going for 4 years and I am not ashamed to say it here that I wish I had done a better job at stepping back more than once in a while. Or done less, because whirlwinds spin, catch and lay the path clear, but leave behind destruction and mess.

If you don't have 10 minutes- you have a bigger problem.

Let’s cut the BS. If you’re stuck in a cycle of constant motion with no progress, it’s time to hit pause. Slowing down isn’t lazy. It’s strategic. In those rare quiet moments when you’re not frantically answering emails or making lists, that’s when clarity shows up. That’s when the ideas start flowing. And trust me, when you slow down, even for five minutes, you set yourself up to drive forward with laser focus.

So how do you do it? How do you stop spinning in circles and start moving with purpose? You start small. Like, 10 minutes small. Here are 5 unapologetically simple steps to kickstart your day with style and substance:

1. Set Your Alarm 10 Minutes Earlier

Before you roll your eyes—hear me out. We’re talking 10 minutes, not an hour. Just one week of getting up 10 minutes earlier gives you space to breathe, think, and plan without rushing. It’s your secret weapon to take charge of your day instead of letting it bulldoze you.

2. Make Your Alarm 10 Minutes Ahead

Here’s the hack: Set your clock ahead 10 minutes. It tricks your brain into thinking you’ve got less time than you do. You’ll be amazed at how much calmer and more in control you feel when you’re not sprinting out the door.

3. Get Outside for 5 Minutes

I don’t care if it’s raining, snowing, or the sun is shining—get your butt outside. Breathe in some fresh air. Look at the sky. Those five minutes are pure gold for resetting your mindset. Plus, bonus points for moving your body while you’re at it.

4. Write Down 3 Priorities

Grab a sticky note, journal, or even the back of a napkin. Write down the three things that matter most for the day. Not 10, not 20—just three. This tiny act of focus will help you crush your day like the powerhouse you are.

5. Do One New Thing

Here’s where it gets fun: Shake things up. Drink your coffee on the porch instead of at the counter. Take a different route to work. Listen to a podcast instead of scrolling. Trying something new lights up your brain and gets you out of autopilot.

Why This Works

Because slowing down isn’t just about finding calm—it’s about creating space for you. That’s when free thinking happens. That’s when your best ideas show up. That’s when you remember why you’re doing all this in the first place.

So, are you ready to commit to 10 minutes for just one week? Try it. Challenge yourself. You’re not too busy for this—you’re too important not to. And who knows? This little experiment might just change the way you see your mornings, your productivity, and yourself.

Stop spinning. Start steering. Let’s do this. I got you,
