Aging Fierce: Why Being a Woman Over 40 in Canada is a Revolution

Fyonna Vanderwerf | APR 7, 2025

Let’s get one thing straight: getting older as a woman isn’t a crisis — it’s a damn revolution!

( and I don't remember asking for this fight and this opportunity to be a warrior.....)

But society doesn’t exactly make it easy. Somewhere around 40, we start to notice the shift. Advertisers stop marketing to us, magazines vanish us, and suddenly we’re expected to disappear into neutral-toned cardigans and quiet hobbies. Meanwhile, we’re raising families, crushing careers, surviving loss, managing hormones, and doing it all while being told to "age gracefully" (whatever that means).

We’re not little men. Our hormones, biology, energy levels, and needs are completely different — and we deserve training, healthcare, and support that reflects that. The good news? That change is happening. The bad news? It’s slow

Canadian Stats That’ll Make You Grit Your Teeth:

  • 1 in 3 women in Canada are currently peri- or post-menopausal.
  • Most women will spend a third of their lives in post-menopause.
  • Only 20% of medical residents in Canada receive training on menopause.
  • Nearly 50% of women feel dismissed or not taken seriously when reporting menopause symptoms to a doctor.

We are the most experienced, least supported, and most essential demographic. And the real kicker? We still show up. Every damn day.

10 Ways to Show Up for YOU Before Anyone Else:

  1. Book your own time first. Your workout, your walk, your peace.
  2. Lift heavy. Your bones and your brain will thank you.
  3. Eat protein first. Breakfast is not coffee. It’s fuel.
  4. Say NO more often. You don’t owe your time to everyone.
  5. Sprint and sweat. Power lives in effort.
  6. Track your symptoms. They matter.
  7. Build a community that gets it. You're not meant to do this alone.
  8. Laugh, a lot. It’s literal medicine.
  9. Sleep like it’s your job. Recovery is part of the plan.
  10. Look in the mirror and compliment yourself every damn day.

3 Books Every Fierce Woman Should Read:

  • "Next Level" by Dr. Stacy Sims – Game-changing science about how women should train, fuel, and recover.
  • "The Upgrade" by Louann Brizendine – Neuroscience that proves aging female brains are wired for greatness.
  • "Witches, Sluts, Feminists" by Kristen J. Sollee – Because being bold has always been misunderstood.
