Addiction Doesn’t Just Steal One Life—It Fractures Entire Families

Fyonna Vanderwerf | MAY 4, 2025

Let’s not sugarcoat it: Addiction is a monster. It doesn’t just consume the person using—it devours families, shatters trust, and leaves a trail of grief that can last generations.

I know this because I’ve lived it.

I lost my sister to addiction just under 2 months ago. She was many things, addiction being a huge part of it, with all its challenges.. But addiction doesn’t care about potential. It doesn’t care about love. It took her, and it left our family in pieces. It was me thast had to handle the calls, the funeral home, the difficulties with managing other people's grief, and coming to terms with the matter of fact normalization of her overdose as just one of many in a single day.

Addiction is not a solo act. It’s a ripple effect that touches everyone- siblings, children, friends. And the aftermath? It’s a mix of guilt, anger, confusion, and heartbreak.

📊 The Canadian Reality: Addiction by the Numbers

  • 47,000 Canadians die annually due to substance abuse.
  • Men have higher rates of substance use disorders, while women have higher rates of mood and anxiety disorders.
  • Young people aged 15 to 24 are more likely to experience substance use disorders than any other age group.

These aren't just statistics—they're lives, families, and communities affected.

🧠 The Aftermath: Guilt, Shame, and the Silent Suffering

After losing someone to addiction, families often grapple with:

  • Guilt: "Could I have done more?"
  • Shame: "What will others think?"
  • Anger: "Why did they choose this path?"
  • Confusion: "How did we get here?"

These feelings are valid, but they can also be paralyzing. It's essential to recognize them, process them, and seek support.
